Historical Directories is a digital library of local and trade directories for England and Wales, from 1750 to 1919. It contains high quality reproductions of comparatively rare books, essential tools for research into local and genealogical history.

Historical Directories is produced and owned by the University of Leicester.

Bristol’s first directory, published in 1775, was the work of James Sketchley, a Small Street broker and auctioneer.

Concentrating largely on the names and addresses of merchants and tradesmen it’s a bit sparse, with a few private residences.

The first really useful directory to come along was Wright’s, in Victorian times.

The volumes contain some great advertising.
